Career counselor believes in her clients
Staff

NAME: Nena Davis, 31, Matawan
OCCUPATION: Career counselor and owner of Sage Counseling and Consulting, (732) 583-0810; www.sage-counseling.com

WHAT SHE DOES: "It's helping people figure out what their interests are, helping them figure out what their skills are and where to go from there. I also help clients connect to where jobs are that fit their interests. I may do an assessment by talking to somebody or I may do some tests or look at resumes.

"I work with people individually and in workshops. The individuals are usually referrals, or they may be from a local psychologist who has a client who just needs a little help with career goals. I've done workshops for groups like the YMCA and for local libraries. I've done workshops on topics such as conflict resolution, career self-assessment, interview techniques, preparing for college."

GETTING STARTED: "After college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I learned firsthand how hard it is to figure out a career path. I ended up working in the admissions department of a vegetarian cooking school in Manhattan. I started helping people with their resumes and thinking about possible jobs. From there, I went to Barnard College, where I was in the career development office. While I was there, I started working on my degrees at Columbia University. I have a master's in organizational psychology and a master's in education in psychological counseling. I also worked for a number of years at New York University in the Stern School of Business as a career counselor.

"When my husband, Andrew, and I moved to Matawan a few years ago, we started thinking about raising a family and the commute was hard. I've always been an entrepreneur at heart, so I started the business in early 2003. I just had a daughter, Clara, who was born June 7. But it's great. It's nice to be able to have my own business because then I can be home with her and I can run the business out of my home.

"One of the areas I focus on is working with women and talking about the challenge of trying to fit career and family life together. Fortunately for me, this has worked out very well so far."

OUTSIDE OF WORK: "Well, there's Clara, there's my husband (Andrew Henckler) and then there's beagle rescue. My husband and I are involved with a number of organizations dealing with beagle rescue, education and welfare. We transport beagles in situations such as dogs that are retired from hunting packs and need to get from maybe Tennessee, where they were in a hunting pack, to a new home that may be in Boston. We also adopted a rescued beagle ourselves and he's a love. We have two. We also do a lot of outdoors sort of things - hiking, canoeing. That's the reason why we moved to Monmouth County, because the parks system is just so amazing and there's so much you can do. We're very outdoorsy."

WORDS TO LIVE BY: "You can do it. I really believe that if someone believes in themselves, they're capable of great things. I believe in human potential. I believe in individuals. And I believe in kindness and in ability and in just watching people grow."
